An organisation named Oxfam International has affirmed that not less than 2,969,158 million Nigerians proceed into extreme poverty over the last six months as reported by the World Poverty Clock.

The Oxfam International Country Director in Nigeria, Mr Constant Tchona, made this report known in Abuja on Monday, during the organisation Programme Quality Review and Planning meeting, which is the theme “On the Road To Becoming an Influencing Hub.”

Tchona lamented that a high proportion of low-class Nigerians live below N684 ($1.90) per daily.

Nigeria has, however, been named the World Capital of Poverty, after about 91,501,377 live below the extreme poverty level as of April 2019.

The report revealed that, in six months, the number of low-class Nigerians living below the poverty level increased to 94,470,535.

He said, “What this implies is that there have been an additional 2,969,158 people more into extreme poverty.”

“In contrast, the figure is more than the population of both Gambia and Cape Verde together.”

“Presently, Nigeria is off-track to meet up with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) AMD study has revealed that by 2030 more than 25 per cent of the world’s extreme poor will reside in Nigeria.”
