Jamaica Set To Begin Process Of Removing Queen Elizabeth As Head Of State

Jamaica could be the next Caribbean island to become a republic as the country is reportedly planning on removing Queen Elizabeth as its Head of State.

The news arrives as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are set to continue their Caribbean tour in Kingston on Tuesday, in celebration of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

However, according to Good Morning Britain reporter Noel Phillips, a source from the Jamaican government has confirmed plans remove the Queen as its Head of State as soon as the royals leave the island.

‘They don’t want William and Kate here.’

“I’ve been speaking to a source within the Prime Minister’s Government who has told me that as soon as they leave, Jamaica will begin the process of removing the Queen as head of state,” Phillips said.

“I’m trying to make sense myself as to why they are hosting William and Kate knowing very well they are going to remove the Queen as Head of State. And that this diplomatic charm mission appears to be a complete waste of time.”

Phillips’ comments arrived just hours before a demonstration calling for reparations will be staged near the British High Commission in the capital of Kingston.

The protest has been organised by the Advocates Network, a human rights coalition of Jamaican activists and equalities organisations, who have also penned a letter to the monarchy calling for an apology and reparations for chattel slavery.

“We will not participate in your Platinum Jubilee celebration!” the letter reads.
“We see no reason to celebrate 70 years of the ascension of your grandmother to the British throne because her leadership, and that of her predecessors, have perpetuated the greatest human rights tragedy in the history of humankind.

“We are of the view that an apology for British crimes against humanity, including but not limited to, the exploitation of the indigenous people of Jamaica, the transatlantic trafficking of Africans, the enslavement of Africans, indentureship and colonisation is necessary to begin a process of healing, forgiveness, reconciliation and compensation.”

If Jamaica removes the Queen as its Head of State, it will follow Barbados who officially became a republic in November.
